MY THERAPEUTIC STYLE

My work in art therapy is deeply threaded with my art practice and my social justice activism; together, these three modes of work constitute one, holistic social justice praxis. When creating art with individuals and communities, I seek to embody a consciousness of people’s unique stories. Understanding that we all carry layered experiences of oppression, and that those experiences influence social interaction, I pay close attention to power dynamics in human relationships. I value discussion about markers of identity such as class, race, gender, sexuality, language, national & regional identity, ability, age, and relationship to religion and spirituality. In line with the notion of person-centered counseling, my goal as an art therapist is to create safe environments where people feel empowered to direct their own personal journeys of healing and fulfillment.

MY ORIENTATION + SKILLS

My philosophy of practice is influenced by Relational-Cultural Counseling Theory and Social Justice Art Therapy Praxis, both of which recognize the impact of personal, community, and environmental relationships on a person's development, health, and well-being. In my art therapy and activist work, I engage a trauma-informed lens, supported by professional certifications in sexual assault crisis intervention, medical advocacy for survivors of sexual assault, support for survivors of domestic violence, and support for LGBTQIA-identified youth and adults. I am committed to anti-racist principles in my work and life. To date, I have designed and facilitated art-based initiatives for diverse age groups in a variety of settings including transitional housing communities, public schools, medical and psychiatric inpatient settings, and localized social service agencies.
